Pregnancy & Postpartum Management in Curlewis & The Bellarine Peninsula

Fresh Start Physiotherapy offers Pregnancy & Postpartum Management

Physiotherapy is highly recognised in the area of antenatal and postnatal education, exercise prescription and management.

During pregnancy, a number of changes can occur to the expectant mother’s body. As the hormone ‘relaxin’ is produced to enable to the ligaments of the pelvis to stretch to accommodate the baby during birth, this can lead to a number of common issues. Additionally, the weight of the baby and size of the baby can also have a significant influence on a women’s body.

Some of the issues that arise from pregnancy include:

  • Pelvic pain and pelvic instability
  • Incontinence
  • Abdominal muscle separation (diastasis rectus)
  • Back pain
  • Postural pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Swelling of the ankles and feet
  • DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis
  • General fluid retention
  • General aches and pains

Physiotherapy is able to provide pregnant women safe and effective management strategies to help overcome some of the difficulties outlined above with;

  • Antenatal education
  • Pregnancy specific exercises
  • Individual musculoskeletal treatments
  • Home exercise programs
  • Brace and garment prescription
  • Prescription of walking aids
  • Postural exercises and education
  • Custom splinting for carpal tunnel and DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis
