Physiotherapy is highly recognised in the area of antenatal and postnatal education, exercise prescription and management.

During pregnancy, a number of changes can occur to the expectant mother’s body. As the hormone ‘relaxin’ is produced to enable to the ligaments of the pelvis to stretch to accommodate the baby during birth, this can lead to a number of common issues. Additionally, the weight of the baby and size of the baby can also have a significant influence on a women’s body.

Some of the issues that arise from pregnancy include:

  • Pelvic pain and pelvic instability
  • Incontinence
  • Abdominal muscle separation (diastasis rectus)
  • Back pain
  • Postural pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Swelling of the ankles and feet
  • DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis

  • General aches and pains

Physiotherapy is able to provide pregnant women safe and effective management strategies to help overcome some of the difficulties outlined above with;

  • Antenatal education

  • Custom splinting for carpal tunnel and DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis

After the birth of the baby, some women will require Physiotherapy involvement to;

  • Assist with pelvic floor recovery through positioning, specific exercises and education
  • Be prescribed and fitted with a brace or garment to assist with pelvic pain and instability, back pain or abdominal muscle separation
  • Receive education on wound management and care post caesarean section and peroneal sutures
  • Have a splint made, receive advice and a tailored Rehabilitation program for Carpal tunnel syndrome and DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis
  • Be guided on Returning to exercise, sport and work
  • Be prescribed a tailored Rehabilitation program for pelvic instability and abdominal separation
